PES provided structural design services for General Dynamics Electric Boat’s new 70,000 SF Nuclear Support Facility – an essential operations and emergency response hub located within the shipyard. The six-story facility consolidates mission-critical teams including the Radiological Emergency Response Team, Naval Reactors personnel, the Nuclear Test Team, and specialized training units, in addition to housing the Emergency Command Center.
Designed to remain fully operational during both radiological and non-radiological events, the building serves federal, military, and local stakeholders with high standards of structural performance and resilience.
PES developed a robust structural system consisting of steel framing, steel bar joist roof with metal deck sheathing, composite steel floor systems with concrete slabs, slab-on-grade foundations, and light-gauge metal stud walls, all supported on shallow foundations optimized for site conditions.
Special design consideration was given to ensure continuity of operations during emergency scenarios. The structure was fully coordinated with critical building systems – including power, data, audiovisual, acoustics, and environmental controls – to meet stringent requirements for response time, reliability, and situational readiness.
PES’s integrated design approach ensured the facility could support rapid coordination, secure communication, and uninterrupted mission execution under demanding conditions.
