John C. Godbold Federal Building
Honors and Recognition
2012 Award of Excellence in Rehabilitation – The Georgia Trust
2012 Award of Excellence in Adaptive Use – Atlanta Urban Design Commission
Located in the heart of the historic Fairlie-Poplar district in downtown Atlanta, the John C. Godbold Federal Building fused together three buildings originally built for the Crumley-Sharp Hardware Company. Receiving LEED Gold certification, the John C. Godbold Federal Building is part of the GSA Design Excellence Program. The 130,000 SF rehabilitation and adaptive reuse project met both the security and circulation needs of the building. The design called for the installation of a new structural steel ground-level floor structure while maintaining four levels of structure above along with preserving the historic heavy wood timber framing while reinforcing the building’s masonry envelope. Exterior walls were reinforced to meeting modern blast and progressive collapse requirements.
